A Rare Combination of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy

چکیده
Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) are two separate disease entities with differing clinical and electrodiagnostic features. We report the case of a 56-year-old female who was referred to us with a confusing clinical and electrodiagnostic picture of CIDP vs ALS. In spite of immunosuppressive treatments, her condition rapidly turned fatal favoring ALS. Autopsy confirmed coexisting features of CIDP and ALS. Combination of CIDP and ALS are very rare and creates diagnostic dilemma for providers and uncertainty and fear for patients. The etiology of this condition remains unknown. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the underlying neuro-inflammatory process.

Supramaximal Stimulus Intensity as a Diagnostic Tool in Chronic Demyelinating Neuropathy
Objective. The ability to correctly identify chronic demyelinating neuropathy can have important therapeutic and prognostic significance. The stimulus intensity value required to obtain a supramaximal compound muscle action potential amplitude is a commonly acquired data point that has not been formally assessed as a diagnostic tool in routine nerve conduction studies to identify chronic neurop...
متن کاملComparison of sensitivity and specificity among 15 criteria for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.
INTRODUCTION There have been 15 formal sets of criteria published for the diagnosis of CIDP. No study to date has compared the sensitivity and specificity of all published criteria in the same patient population. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with CIDP (n = 56) and controls with diabetic polyneuropathy (n = 37) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (n = 39) who were...
متن کاملAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in a Patient with Behçet’s Disease
Behçet’s disease is a multisystem vasculitis. Its neurological involvement mostly includes parenchymal and non-parenchymal central nervous system manifestations. Peripheral nervous system presentations are rare. A 32-yr-old male patient who fulfilled the international study group criteria for Behçet’s disease, referred to our center with walking difficulty and repeated falling downs. Neurologi...

Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a relatively rare disease that can be associated with various mental, physical and psychological burdens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions based on positive psychology on post-traumatic growth, self-compassion and quality of life in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Methods: This descriptive-...

Described are patients initially diagnosed with progressive spinal muscular atrophy (PSMA), in whom further evaluation established another diagnosis. The authors prospectively investigated incident and prevalent cases of PSMA. Seventeen of 89 patients, after initial registration, were later excluded because reassessment revealed a diagnosis other than PSMA. In 11 of the 17 patients with a revis...
